I recently shared a photo of me holding my mom’s book, “Overcoming Dark Family Secrets.” I didn’t go into detail about it though…
My mother has overcome quite a bit in her lifetime, including every abuse imaginable from a young age into her thirties. She shared her story openly, in the rawest way possible in her book. She also shared the things she did to pull herself up, see her worthiness, and build the life she wanted to live.
Choice is a powerful thing. It’s the most powerful thing we have. She taught me that. She actually taught me several things, some of which were unintentional and unfortunate. However, the positives that she taught me will forever outweigh the negatives.
One of the words that has come up frequently surrounding this book is “bravery.” She doesn’t see that she’s brave. I do, though. It takes a lot of courage to dig yourself out of a dark place, and even more courage to openly share it in the way that she is.
To say that I am proud of my mom is an understatement. She has taught me what resiliency looks like. That it’s okay to change your mind and go in a new direction. That it’s never a failure if you keep going.
I am honored to have been able to work on this project with her, as an editor, but also as a sounding board. More than anything though, I’m proud that she has once again shown me, by example, that life is ours to make what we want of it. That it’s perfectly okay to be where you are right now, and that you get to choose what you do with the things that happen beyond your control.
She has had people say ugly, nasty things to her and about her, most of which were things beyond her control. Yet she has continued to be the same strong, loving, kind, forgiving human that I have always known her to be.
This year has been especially tough on her, between running her business, servicing her clients, putting her book together and preparing it for release, and nearly dying from Covid, then suffering the aftermath of it. She’s still not completely back to full health, yet she pushes herself daily to be the best she can be in every facet of life.
Once again, she is teaching resilience. And patience. And compassion, which starts within.
I would love for you to support her on this journey by picking up a copy of “Overcoming Dark Family Secrets.” Some parts are difficult to read and may be triggers. However, she takes it past the abuse and shares some of the most amazing tips to retrain yourself and see yourself for the worthy, amazing person that you are.
Whether you’ve gone through abuse or not, chances are there is some sort of trauma that you have endured. These tips can help. If you’re in a place of peace, they might help someone you love.
Keep going, Mama. I love you and am incredibly proud of you!
