Every year I hear people talk about what a crazy year it has been; though, I think 2020 beats most years for that title, at least in my lifetime. The year started with plenty of memes and excitement about how many holidays fell on weekends, such as Halloween.
This year Halloween brings a full moon, resetting our clocks, and it all takes place on a Saturday, which should have been perfect! The world had other plans for most of us this year; you know, the whole pandemic thing being thrown into the mix. Several people are extra cautious right now, while others are ready to return to their sense of “normal.”
Since my kids are grown, the holiday hasn’t been the same for me. I used to enjoy watching them pick out their costumes and taking them from house to house to procure buckets full of candy that they’d trade like commodities for a few days.
My youngest son has been creative with some of his costumes. As a kid he was a cowboy, skeleton, a dinosaur, and all of the other regular things most little boys like to be. As a teenager, he was a “crackhead” in the style of Dave Chappelle. He wore sweats, a raggedy torn and stained T-shirt, and put baby powder around his face. He was holding a sign that said, “Will work for crack.” Another year he put on layers of clothes with different colors and said he was a rainbow. This year he asked if he could just wear sweats and say he’s the invisible man. (I said he wouldn’t be invisible though. He said he would just say, “Oops!”)
My oldest was a cowboy or something to do with the military every year since he was four-years-old. Those are the only two costumes he’d choose. Every. Single. Year. Before that, we picked out his costumes. One of my favorites was when he was a three-year-old boxer.
I hadn’t dressed up as far back as I could remember when I went to my first Halloween party as an adult. I wore black leggings, a black tank top, a neon pink fishnet mini dress, neon pink leg warmers and other accessories, and black heels. I was an 80’s chick (think Madonna). The guy I was seeing went as M.C. Hammer. It was tons of fun, especially when he did the infamous “Can’t touch this” dance in his parachute pants.
I went to Halloween parties on my motorcycle twice. Once as a pirate in a short dress, fishnets, and boots. I hit a bump on the freeway and felt a sudden gust of cold wind all up my backside. Whoever was behind me got a show. I was trying to tuck my dress back underneath me at about ninety miles per hour. That was fun.
The following year I was a witch and tucked my hat inside of my jacket while riding. I completely forgot my broom. I wanted to try to rig it to look like I was riding the broom. I thought it would be hilarious but didn’t figure it out in time.
The last time I dressed up was in 2016. I had three costumes that year. The department I worked with at the time decided to do themed costumes. I was a minion. Then one of my closest friends and I dressed up as chola gangsta clowns for one event and mimes for another. I even managed to stay in character most of the night and not talk. The more I enjoyed adult beverages, the less I remained in character!
I also go trick-or-treating with another close friend and his littles every year. That’s been our tradition for the past few years. His daughter is creative and dresses up as something new every year. His son is always Batman. He may be a different version, but he’s always Batman.
This year, I’m waiting to see what their plans are to see if trick-or-treating is in the cards. I also have a get together I’ll be attending, in costume. I’ll try to remember to take a few pics to share with y’all on my social media pages.
What is your Halloween tradition? Is it changing this year? If you dress up share your pics with me and tag me on social media!
