A group of five women from Las Vegas ventured off to explore Seattle in February of 2016. It was our second trip together and we were celebrating one of my closest friend’s birthdays. I used to see movies or hear about girl’s trips, but had never really experienced one until I started going with this group.
Like most trips, we started out super excited to be heading out of time to a new city to explore. We had lots of giggles and foolery starting at the airport and on the flight. It got even better once we landed in Seattle and got an Uber to our hotel. It was dark since it was late at night, and it was raining because it was Seattle.
The driver informed us that it was 2013 in his country. Huh? I was sitting in the front seat. I glanced in the back at the other girls and tried to keep my composure. Judging from their faces, they heard the same thing I did. It was 2016 in Vegas, so we were severely confused.
I asked him if he liked living in Seattle. He said he did, especially when it was bright outside, like “now.” I looked back at the girls again, since it was super dark outside. And raining. It was an interesting ride, to say the least.
We all got a great giggle out of that ride and ended up using it as a reference to ask every Uber driver we had all week what year it was. Most of them looked at us like we were crazy, so we shared our first experience with them.
We had an awesome hotel downtown, just a couple of blocks from Pike Place Market. We went to a small local spot the first night that was a few blocks from our room for food. It was almost like a low-key club. They were getting ready to close, which was a reminder for us that everywhere isn’t like Vegas – where everything is open twenty-four-seven.
The next day was full of non-stop fun. We started at Pike Place and watched them throwing fish. There were some amazing shops and vendors, and of course coffee. Everyone seemed so pleasant and chill. We decided it was because everyone was high. (At the time, Washington was one of four states where recreational marijuana use was legal.)
That evening we went to a dispensary and procured edibles, then went to a show. We saw a Drag Queen dinner show, because the birthday girl loves Drag Queens. She says they are her spirit animals.
I do not take part in marijuana because I am useless when high. I was so stuck on a spot on the table that night. The girls were giggling and got my attention asking me what I was staring at. I had no clue. I remember concentrating really hard to look at the stage until I noticed they all went back to watching the show as well, then my eyes went right back to the spot on the table. I started for about three songs. Maybe longer. I was high.
We explored several different areas around the city and ate tons of great food. We got loads of coffee and cheese. Of course we stuck gum on the gum wall, because why not? (It’s gross, but it’s a thing.)
Britt and I stayed an extra night after the others had to return home. We had a great dinner at a downtown restaurant and enjoyed a lowkey evening. The next morning we took a ferry ride to Bainbridge Island. (The ferry ride was one of my “must-do” things because I’m a fan of Grey’s Anatomy and felt close to Derek Shepherd in that moment.) The shops were quaint and fun and we ate breakfast in an old train car.
That last day was leisurely, but enjoyable. We were happy to return home, but sad to leave. (You know how you need a vacation from your vacation to recuperate?) Of course we were already discussing where our next trip would be, which has become a list of destinations.
Where was your last trip and where do you want to go next?
