“Dreamer in action” is how I was introduced as I was welcomed on stage once. I think that’s pretty fitting, especially with my current outlook and beliefs.
I’ve always dreamed big…from wanting to be the first female Los Angeles Dodger to my current big dream of wanting to open a school for at-risk youth. The “in action” part comes from actively taking steps to make things happen. I no longer believe in chasing anything – from money to love to relationships to dreams or anything in between.
Sometimes, when dreams do come true, they look nothing like what we thought they would.
I do believe that we try to alter our course sometimes, but things keep coming back up if it’s meant for us. As I’ve shared, I never intended (consciously) to be doing what I’m doing as far as image consulting and styling.
However, as I look back over my life there were always little arrows pointing the way. In my junior year of high school I took a fashion design class and sketched an entire clothing line. (My sketches weren’t great, as I’m not an artist.) I only took that class because I needed another elective credit to graduate early. And I was determined to do so.
The teacher for that course also ran the student store and decided to charter a club in our school for DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America). We went to one regional competition, and then the state competition only a couple of months into our school having the club.
Imagine my surprise when I won first place in the state of California for Fashion Merchandising. My trophies are long gone, but I still have my DECA blazer and the pins I collected at the Nationals that year. I didn’t place at Nationals, but I still learned a lot.
I didn’t compete in my senior year because I graduated early. That meant I had to step down as the President of our chapter. My instructor got incredibly upset about that. I still have my custom gavel they gave me when I took office.
Even though I chose a guy and kids and other things in life, I was awarded scholarships I never even applied for because of DECA. I completely forgot about that experience for more than a couple of decades.
I also had a LulaRoe boutique with one of my closest friends for a couple of years. We used to do lives and sell some creatively designed garments, putting together outfits and whatnot. We even hosted a couple of fashion shows and parties displaying our inventory.
It’s not really the clothes that I care about, but the transformations. I believe that beauty is an inside-out process and the better you feel, the better you look.
This allows me to fulfill a dream, passion, and purpose of helping shine light on others so they can see themselves from a brand new angle. It’s opening doors for me to fulfill dreams I never even knew I had.
I’m currently speaking and sharing experiences and my skillset to help others step into themselves in a bigger, more powerful way. Do you know what kind of ripple effect that creates? I’m beginning to see it, and it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever been a part of.
As I continue to grow and build programs, I’m also meeting amazing people who are passionate about the changes they’re contributing to. Shifts are happening. I’m laying the foundation to be able to open this school and make a larger impact on my local community. Maybe even yours.
What are you actively doing to make your life better? Or those around you?
Dream. Dream big. And take steps towards those dreams. I’ll meet you there!
